So it’s been a while since I last wrote and in that fairly long and very transitional stage, much has been going on. I am now in the process of leaving Beijing for Hong Kong, via a month in London. I am going to establish and direct Ben Brown Fine Arts in Hong Kong. We will be showing at the Art HK in May and aim to open the gallery in September. Ben Brown specialises in high end Western Contemporary Art – a whole exciting new field for me. www.benbrownfinearts.com
Red T will remain Beijing based and continue to source and promote the best of emerging art in China – not exclusively Chinese though. We will be updating our website every 3 months with new artists to look out for as collectors, galleries or simply art enthusiasts. www.redt-art.com
Red T.art’s main promotional platform will be Affordable Art Beijing, this year to be held on May 30th-31st at the Sanlitun Village. www.affordableartbeijing.com
Red T Music is changing its name to Outdustry which Ed Peto will take on independently. www.outdustry.com
So now I am going to be HK based but doing a lot of travel around Asia and will probably be in the UK more often. So if you have any Western or Asian art interests, I will be in the perfect position to help.

Red T.art has been representing Wang Wei for nearly a year and in this time we have exhibited her in Beijing, Hong Kong, and now… the London Art Fair. Wang Wei is a talented, young, Chinese photographer who uses her own creative intuition to come up with unique, heartfelt, insightful and relevant work reflecting a contemporary China otherwise overlooked.
We submitted 4 of her Standard Room images to the 2008 Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery in London and were delighted that she was selected as one of the images to be shown in the final touring exhibition.
The 2009 London Art Fair opens on 14th January and Red T.art was selected to exhibit the ‘Standard Room’ Series by Wang Wei in the Projects section, by far the most interesting part of any art fair! This will further launch Wang Wei in the UK which is just another stepping stone in her promising career. She has already been recognised by various media.
For anyone interested in promising artists of the future, watch this space, and you are very welcome to visit us at P22 at the London Art Fair.
A friend from Time Out Beijing asked me to review the Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art’s new Show.
The attention to detail and quality demanded by UCCA is evident in this show. It is a collection of some of the best work from major shows of the past; like Yang Zhenzhang’s 922 Rice Corns and the media overload that is Wang Du’s Space-Time Tunnel, and newer work; like Cao Fei’s RMB City, a delightful digital video tour of a futuristic China.
‘Our Future’ is a vast array of clever, enticing, thought provoking work. Continue reading ‘Review: UCCA: ‘Our Future’. July 19th – October 12th 2008′
Opening on May 8th 2008 at 7pm, this exhibition shows works by Chen Yu, an artist Red T has been dealing for 3 years. In this time Chen Yu has risen significantly to become a known artist in China. Her works are carefully constructed using oil paint and Chinese lacquer. The effect is beautiful swathes of colour across canvas in what comes across as random patterns, reminiscent of flowers and the female form. I am determined to use this whole nightmareish experience to get some real meaty articles written about the current state of things in China and so while I get on with those, and my move to Singapore, take a look at some of the pictures from the past few weeks. It is so sad but we have dried our eyes, relocated to a new office (where things work) and are back on track with grand plans for the future.
The Guardian were amongst the many media which covered the event. Read more here and watch the Guardian video about it all here

There was word straight from building management’s mouth that we would be torn down today but having sent out 2 confirmation parties this morning, we are now told by the workers, that it will happen tomorrow (9th March) afternoon. Again, I will try to send people to confirm before I ring the alarm but that is the new standby date… Continue reading ‘Update 4: actual demolition time?’
Our ‘De-Face’ ended up being a great success with around 400 people tuning up to leave their contributions on the walls. A photographic treat for the hoards of snap happy visitors, with some professionals and media weaving amongst the crowds. We have been left with some really great graffiti images and wall paintings in literally, every possible space of wall, glass, metal, mirror, even the toilet and air-conditioning units got it. Also some great slogans; ‘Red T is the Red Sun in our hearts’ and ‘I Love Red T’. At least we know we have been appreciated. Continue reading ‘Update 3: A Success and a New Address’
So, things remain as up in the air as they possibly could but Soos and his graffiti team are moving into the space THIS Saturday afternoon (March 1st) and I figure we make the whole day into the ‘De-Face’ party day. Looks like we’ll have no electricity anyway so the day light will help. Bring your paint brushes and lets create our final ode to the 798 Red T Space.
Lets say from 2pm….
The ‘De-Face’ will begin this Saturday with graffiti artists coming in after lunch and any passers by encouraged to participate. The big party should happen next Saturday (March 8th). However, as this nightmare continues to develop, timing is more and more uncertain and it seems we are surrounded by crooks. There is so much deceit and story spinning going on around this that I am desperate just to leave, in Red T style , and not turn back. But… of course, it is not that simple. Continue reading ‘Update 1: De-Face party Sat, March 8th’
So we have the news. We will be demolished.
It is with great sorrow and disappointment I announce the news that our beloved 798 Red T Space as we know it, will be knocked down on March 2nd (or so they say) to make way for a car park complex. Continue reading ‘No, 798 is NOT safe from demolition’
