Opening on May 8th 2008 at 7pm, this exhibition shows works by Chen Yu, an artist Red T has been dealing for 3 years. In this time Chen Yu has risen significantly to become a known artist in China. Her works are carefully constructed using oil paint and Chinese lacquer. The effect is beautiful swathes of colour across canvas in what comes across as random patterns, reminiscent of flowers and the female form. Chen Yu states her works are not more intimate than what you take from an initial impression. Inspired by natural beauty and her personal exploration into life and her surroundings, it is easy to draw superficial comparisons between Chen Yu’s work and that of Georgia O’Keeffe. But Chen Yu is not a feminist, nor does she explore the feminine form in what she does, her work is a translation onto canvas of what she sees and feels. As a female contemporary artist in China she stands out even more having developed her own refreshing abstract platform which is unmistakenly female and unintentionally, yet undeniably sexy.
Red T’s Chen Yu solo exhibiton at the Beijing JW Marriott opens in conjunction with a special performance by the visiting Battery Dance Company. The exhibition will run until August 7th 2008 at the JW Marriott 2nd floor lobby gallery.

Hi Tamsin - I’m coming to Beijing next week (17 - 19 July) to write about the Ullens centre. I’d very much like to meet up and talk about your experiences as a gallerist.Would you be very kind and drop me an email? Thanks, Hettie
Sorry to have missed you Hetti. I would have been happy to meet but unfortunately I didn’t ready your post in time. Let me know if you have more questions I can help you with from a distance.
